A lot has happened in the last month. A lot. And, for most of that time, Subway Domer has remained somewhat silent. So, I think that calls for a "Random Randomness." Most of this stuff (OK, all of it) you already know. However, the proverbial 2 cents is about to get dropped on you like an F-bomb from Pat Robertson. (And since I have been in the mood to take a few images from elsewhere and post them here, the Theo Riddick image is a nice random touch. He won't be mentioned again).
We begin...
The burly veterans are back. BlueandGold.com released the names of the four players that are to return for a fifth year of eligibility. This comes from a source close to the program, and leaked to BlueandGold.com. They are:
- #21 WR- Barry Gallup Jr.
- #59 G- Chris Stewart
- #51 G/C- Dan Wenger
- #2 CB- Darrin Walls
Those seniors with another year of eligibility left that either weren't asked or have turned down the opportunity to pursue "real life" are:
- #93 DT- Paddy Mullen
- #97 DE/LB Kallen Wade
- #24 DB- Leonard Gordan
- #39 K- Ryan Burkhart
The only "surprise is that Barry Gallup is returning. Stewart, Wenger, and Walls were the 3 that most everybody knew would return as they all have a legitimate shot of being drafted in 2011. This decision brings the total number of scholarships used for 2010 to 77 out of 85. That leaves 8 spots available for the current recruiting class that is currently 18 players deep. You should only expect a maximum of 6 more commits. (And that's generous).
Of the 4 to return; Stewart, Wenger, and Walls are all probable starters at their positions. Gallup, on the other hand, could fit in as a role player and special teams guru.
Those who are first in line, get a Kevin Rogers bobblehead. Notre Dame got its largest early enrollee class with 5 players making the jump from high school to college before their girlfriends make them drop 5 bills on prom. Those early birds are:
- WR- Tailer Jones
- CB- Lo Wood
- CB- Spencer Boyd
- S- Chris Badger
- QB- Tommy Rees
With possible moves (total speculation) of either Slaughter or Blanton to safety, Wood or Boyd could find themselves in the 2 Deep by the end of spring. Speaking of which, Chris Badger will have a tremendous opportunity to align himself in the 2 Deep as well. Although Notre Dame lost Golden Tate a year early to the NFL Draft, they are still fairly deep at WR. Regardless, WR is a position that many a true freshman have played and played well. Tommy Rees also has a good chance to crack the 2 Deep as he is the only healthy scholarship QB this spring. It will also put Rees a few steps ahead on incoming fall freshman QB, Andrew Hendrix.
Putting true freshman in the 2 Deep is one of my pet peeves, but there is no doubt that all 5 will get their chance this spring.
Michael Floyd drinks like a champion... a Somali-beating Rocky from Minnesota. Usually, off-season news about the Notre Dame football team is basically basic and somewhat boring. However, there is usually one alcohol related incident involving a football player, so why not let it be one of the best WR's in college football.
We all know the insane procedure at Notre Dame for rules violations. It's dumb and outdated. Hopefully, Floyd will learn to keep a lower profile while at home while battling Somali immigrants. It's hard to even imagine Floyd fighting when you watch his interviews. Talk about playing it shy. Anyways, I expect some kind of punishment for Floyd, but probably nothing serious... until Longo gets a hold of him.
On a side not: Boys will be boys, and chicks dig scars. However, Floyd is somewhat fragile- which doesn't help in a fight.
Kiffen, you fucking bastard. That's right. I said it. The media will crucify him for his tactics (except for Cowherd who defends him like a lovesick teenager). I can't believe U$C was this desperate, that their 5th choice to take over for Carroll is the same guy who is involved with the years that U$C is getting investigated about. Are they stupid, or just dipshits?
I don't fear Kiffin the coach, but I do believe that he will lock down the talent in California a little tighter. Notre Dame has done very well there for the last 5 years, and the best recruiter we had for that area was Brian Polian- now a member of the Stanford staff.
On the flipside, this is a great hire as far as the rivalry is concerned. Although the Poodle was deeply hated by Irish fans for his winning ways on the field and in the recruiting wars, he wasn't a cocky little bitch. Kiffin is a cocky little bitch. Kiffin could bring a huge WTF factor to the game. I just have a feeling that Kelly VS. Kiffin could end up very much in Notre Dame's favor.
Notre Dame is staffed at maximum capacity. Brian Kelly made everything official at a press conference Friday morning when he announced the make-up of his staff. They are:
- Brian Kelly... Head Coach
- Bob Diaco... Defensive Coordinator / Inside Linebackers
- Charlie Molnar... Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks
- Tony Alford... Wide Receivers
- Kerry Cooks... Outside Linebackers
- Mike Denbrock...Tight Ends
- Tim Hinton... Running Backs
- Mike Elston... Defensive Line / Special Teams
- Chuck Martin... Defensive Backs
- Ed Warinner... Offensive Line
- Paul Longo... Strength And Conditioning
- Dave Peloquin... Director of Player Development / Recruiting Coordinator
You can see the full interviews of Kelly and the rest of the staff (minus Elston- new dad) HERE
And with that, I leave you- in a second. Be sure to follow Subway Domer on Twitter and on the fan page on Facebook. The links can be found on the front page of Subway Domer in the right hand column. I'll be doing a lot more Tweeting and since this is the offseason, it could be very delusional. Stay tuned...
