Subway Domer's Recruiting Notebook: Ben Councell Be Upon Us

subway domer recruiting notebook

Just as quickly as I talk about summer recruiting being a "slow" kind of deal, the Fighting Irish lock up their 3rd commitment in the last week and a half. Brian Kelly has a plan- and that plan calls for more defense. As celebrated as Brian Kelly is for his offensive schemes, the trouble for the Irish the past two seasons hasn't been their offense, but their defense. Brian Kelly knows this. Brian Kelly understands this. Brian Kelly wants to destroy this- with thunderbolts. Seven, of the now twelve, commitments for the incoming class of 2011 are on the defensive side of the ball.

Are you feeling a trend here? Me too. Continuing the trend is...

ben councellBen Councell, the bastard descendant of Tecumseh. Why? Well who in the hell know, but Ben seems like the kind of person Tecumseh was; determined, quick, wears a feather in his cap- the whole 9. This 6'5" 225 pound linebacker from North Carolina, may look like a "pale-face" but his soul screams "Great-Eagle-Trojan-Breaker," as he becomes the 12th commitment in the Notre Dame incoming class of 2011.

Councell is listed as a 3 star prospect from Rivals, Scout, and ESPN, but there is a general feeling that his stock will probably rise after his senior year. (I can guarantee you that Brian Kelly doesn't give a shit- so neither should you). Ben turned down offers from defensive powers Auburn, North Carolina, and NorthCarolina State (problems with TAH-NOO-TH!!!?) to play for the Irish.

Although he is listed as a defensive end, he will most likely play outside linebacker once he lands in South Bend. So can a 3 star 4-3 defensive end become a 4 star 3-4 linebacker? Who gives a shit?! Can he become the Tribal Ass-Kicker of the Leprechaun Legion... Hells yeah!

Welcome To ND Ben, Descendant of Tecumseh!!!

Your comment about what Kelly thinks of the "stars" is priceless. Brian K. said the same as that in an early interview. The fans had best come to grips with that philosophy. I believe that Kelly will recruit the inner player more than how many stars he has been given in an arbitrary system.
Positive stuff for the Irish...

Subway,

First let me say i love following your blog it rocks and kicks serious ass at the same time, but i have a question to ask and hopefully you can give me one of your ever insightful and kick ass great answers. I went to the spring game this year and have had a starting lineup in my head since we let weis go, and I believe we have a VERY SPECIAL team with potential to do GREAT things so with out further ado Subway from 1 MEGA MEGA Irish fan to you i ask this. I believe and will defend till the death that the Irish will go undefeated this season, if and when they do should they play for the whole enchillada? If this scenario comes to be what would you vote for if you had a say in it?

Long time no see, buddy. Welcome back.

I really like the way Kelly is recruiting. Call me a suck-ass, or naive, but he has a purpose about the way he is recruiting that is a little refreshing. He isn't just going after kids because they are 4 or 5 star players, it's because he feels that they can help the team.

With that said, I still feel that ND has to land some of the elite players if they want to win a National Title. Kelly can win a lot of games in South Bend with 3 star talent, but the Title is reserved for those who have the elite guys to take them over the edge. He is trying to do that, but it may take another year before we see more of those elite guys heading up to ND.

On the 4th of July we can say the following:

*There are 7 more Saturdays until it is basically a bye week for the Irish.

*There are 8 more Saturdays until we can say it is GAME WEEK!

*There are 9 more Saturdays until we kick the ever-living shit out of Purdue.

Nice, huh.

I wish I could share your uber-positive outlook for the 2010 season, but I am taking caution with my predictions this year. 9-3 sounds about right, but it could be better or it could be worse. The slate is clean, and a new era is being ushered in. I am just going to kick back and enjoy it- until I start bitching about it lol.

To answer you question though... If ND did go 12-0 then I can basically guarantee that ND would play for the Title. The schedule is tough enough ( not too tough or too cupcakey) and I think it will be hard to find 2 undefeated teams in 2010 let alone 3. I'd put 'em there, but I may be just a wee bit biased.

You do know, that if even starts off strong, there will be the inevitable bashing of the schedule. Granted it is no harder (or easier) than any other major program (ok, the SEC in conference schedule can be a bear), but it will not be played that way.

I do realize that- quite too well, however if they theoretically go undefeated, then no one will keep them out.
