Irish Blogger Gathering: I Would Have Made A Great Safety

irish blogger gathering

Welcome to the Irish Blogger Gathering here at Subway Domer. Domer Law has the floor for this week, and somebody is in the need of a win more badly than the team itself.

So… the Fighting Irish are 1-3 and heading up to Boston to take on the Eagles. Usually, the Boston College game is right around the time that Notre Dame starts its decline for the season. This year, Notre Dame is hoping to make the BC game its springboard for the future.

Let’s get this IBG started…

1. After 3 straight losses, there appear to be two camps of fans: A. The sky is falling. Coach Kelly is not a good coach, not a good fit, probably won’t ever win a game and should be fired today. B. Coach Kelly is still totally awesome, and you had to expect some bumps and bruises as he builds the team – remember Holtz’s first year? Which camp do you fall into, and why?

Generally, I don’t like putting things into black and white categories, and I especially don’t like comparisons to previous years. However, as a history buff, the similarities between certain coaches and certain seasons is undeniable.

Frankly, if anyone were to choose option (A) I would have to classify that person as damn near close to being a total nutjob. Really? After 4 games: 1 win, 2 close losses to top 25 teams, and another loss to a top 10 team and some people want to throw Kelly in the trash.

You might as well put me in category (B). I fully understand that the Irish have essentially been rebuilding for over 15 years. Irish fans are frustrated and looking for big time success early, but we got that with the previous two coaches, and look how that ended up working out. I won’t judge Kelly too much on what he does this year, as opposed to what he does in 2012, and I won’t judge Kelly too much for what he does in September during this season, as opposed to what he does in November.

2. With the current state of the program, put yourself in a recruit’s shoes. If you had offers from all 12 schools on our schedule and Notre Dame, which would you pick right now and why? Who would your top 3 be?

Two things stand out about this question: (1) What position do I play? and (2)The diversity of the 12 schools is outstanding. We are going to need a recruiting profile to start this thing:

The Subway Domer
Safety
6’1″ 210 lbs.
4.5 40 time (just like everyone else)
Somewhere in Ohio
3***

Although The Subway Domer has played primarily at cornerback, most schools have projected him at safety. His hips are not fluid enough to play corner, but he still has good coverage skills as well as possessing great football instincts. A student of the game, he should be able to translate to the college game fairly quickly. There are concerns that he may not be physical enough against the run, and needs to improve his angles.

The Subway Domer commits to Notre Dame, and not just for the most obvious reason of being a fan his whole life. (1) Playing time. Notre Dame’s safety depth has been less than adequate, and he could see substantial time his freshman year. (2) Program upswing. I like what direction that I think Brian Kelly is going to take this program, and I want to be a part of the new history. (3) Academics. It would be hard to beat the athletic/academic combo of ND. Notre Dame is ranked near the top of every academic indicator that would matter to me, and I would just major in History anyways.

All of those reasons left ND at the top and these three schools right behind:

1. Stanford
2. Michigan State
3. Boston College

3. What’s the trajectory of this season? Is this going to spiral downward into a 2007-esque kind of year, or will the team rally and start winning some game against quality opponents?

Without sounding like “Fanboy Supreme,” I think the season is about to see a massive upswing starting this Saturday at Boston College. I have become resigned at the fact that ND will probably be 8-4 or 7-5 at the end of the season. And honestly, this is probably the record we should have all predicted before the season began. With that said, a 7-5 or 8-4 record is still a pretty good upswing after a 1-4 start.

4. Give me your top 5 reasons why you’d rather go to Notre Dame than Backup College.

Well, considering I didn’t get in to either school, I can’t really mock Boston College too bad. It would kind of make me look like a douchebag. But, I can always try…

1. It’s in Boston. Fuck Boston. I hate the entire sports enterprise of the area.
2. I wouldn’t want to be considered a student of the #2 Catholic school in the country.
3. They actually call themselves, “Superfans.” That’s uhh… supergay.
4. I’m told that BC is full of students that were turned down by ND. I’m an elitist.
5. Doug Flutie went there- Fuck Flutie.

5. I’m depressed after our third straight loss. Do your best to cheer me up and convince me that I should still be excited about this weekend’s game.

Cheer you up? You’re better than that, and so are they. If you can’t get up for a night game at Boston College with our backs against the wall… then I’m not sure I can be much use to you. Drink up, and fire that shit up. (The team- not the weed… not that there is anything wrong with that).

6. If you could ask Coach Kelly any one question, what would it be?

Why in the hell does Robert Hughes only have- oh wait… How in the fuck does Robert Hughes not have ANY carries this season? MMMMHHHHHMMMMMM…..
