There is only one stat that really meant anything to me today. Before I divulge what stat that is, and it should be pretty obvious what that is by now, let me tell you what it wasn't:
It was not the rushing yards. Please take that stat and shove it up some hole. I am not living on planet Bullshit. I understand that games take on certain characteristics as they are played, and this one pushed Notre Dame to just throw the piss out of it.
Yards are yards. And if you want to get to the nuts and bolts about it; Stanford averaged 5.3 yards per play, and Notre Dame averaged 5.2 yards per play. Stanford had just a little over 50 more yards than the Irish.
The one stat, or should I say "statline," was 3rd down conversion. The Irish were 4-13 while Stanford was 11-16. There were only 5 times that Stanford was stopped on third down- and 4 of those times resulted in a FG. Five 3rd down stops that ended in 12 points for Stanford- fuck.
Say what every you want about the rest of the game, but this was the killer stat. I'll get more detailed on the rest of the game in the Hangover post (should be sometime Monday morning) but I just thought that the 3rd down stat needed to be singled out right away.
