Breaking in the Corners with Cover 3 and Cover 4 Defenses

Written by Blog Davie on .

Bennett Jackson and KeiVarae Russell will be making their first starts at cornerback on Saturday. While Irish fans can take some comfort in the fact that neither corner will be facing Robert Woods, defending Navy's flexbone offense requires sound play from the secondary. One of the ways I expect Bob Diaco to take pressure off of his inexperienced corners is to play a fair amount of Cover 3 and Cover 4 behind Notre Dame's 4-3 defense.

How NAVY Can Attack Notre Dame's Defense

Written by Herring Bone on .

Navy's Offensive Coordinator, Ivin Jasper, has his work cut out for him in the Week 1 match-up against Notre Dame in Dublin. An offense that struggled to score against the Irish in 2011 lost many of the programs best players this offseason. 2012 Graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy included fullback Alexander Teich, who tallied 311 total yards against the Irish over the past two contests. Teich has taken his bone-crushing talents to the NAVY Seals and last year's leading rusher, QB Kriss Proctor, also ran out of eligibility. Junior QB Trey Miller takes over the Midshipmen full time and is allegedly a better passer than their recent field generals. Expecting success in his 2012 debut behind an offensive line that could easily be overwhelmed is tough to imagine. Notre Dame is not without defensive concerns, so let's take a look at how a smart coach with 8 months of prep might attack the Irish early.

Joe Montana Is Not Everett Golson's Biggest Fan

Written by The Subway Domer on .

joe montana

Legendary Notre Dame quarterback, Joe Montana, has never been shy with his statements about Notre Dame football. One of his most controversial statements (for Irish fans) was that he thought Notre Dame would only be able to compete for a National Title every 5 years or so.

Below is from a ESPN chat. I present this to you without comment:

Brent (Indy) : Joe, what's your opinion of Everett Golson, ND's new qb? Do you think he's got the skills to take ND to a BCS game? Thanks.

Joe Montana (1:09 PM) : Kelly can't figure out what he wants. Every one of his QBs that he has, he claims is his next star, but he doesn't last long with him. He's probably the least talented thrower that they have, so maybe they're looking to run the ball with him.

Notre Dame Names 2012 Captains

Written by The Subway Domer on .

Brian Kelly finally announced who would be Notre Dame's captains for the 2012 season:

This is after a season where the irish only had one fulltime captain in Harrison Smith. The obvious mix of two offensive and two defensive players is obvious, but I think in this case it is dead on. Hopefully this means that a team that seemed desperate, at times, for leadership in 2011, now has four big time leaders stepping up to the table.

With all of the offseason issues and the tough road ahead, the Irish will have to be able to lean on these four players for guidance and strength throughout the season. I am well pleased.
